When Frederic Dorr Steele died in 1944 his ashes were interred in an unmarked grave in the family plot at the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York. In 2020 a group of those knowledgeable about his work formed the Frederic Dorr Steele Memorial Committee. Funds were solicited for construction and placement of a grave marker, with the support of Steele’s descendants.

The campaign exceeded its initial funding goal, making available funds for the continued maintenance of the gravesite beyond that normally provided by the cemetery. Given the success of the funding campaign, a nonprofit corporation, Frederic Dorr Steele Memorial, Inc., was chartered in New York State to provide care for the grave marker, and to develop new projects to commemorate Steele.

Frederic Dorr Steele Memorial, Inc., is managed by an all-volunteer board whose members receive no compensation. The fdsteele.org website, developed as a volunteer effort, promotes public awareness of Steele’s art and achievements, and continues to solicit contributions for new initiatives.
